2008 Summer Volume 8 No. 1
This Formula for Success Runs in the Family!
Marcelo Massa heads up PolyJohn, South America. His younger brother, a Formula One champion, is also a principal in the family business. During the 2007 season Felipe Massa won three Grand Prix races—Bahrain, Spain, and Turkey. He has achieved an incredible amount of success for someone who has not even celebrated his thirtieth birthday.
For the Massa family, the drive to win is a powerful tradition. Felipe races Formula One cars, while Marcello races sailboats and has been a leader in the development of the portable restroom industry in South America.
Marcello and Felipe know what it takes to win—the right strategy, the right crew, experience, leadership, the right equipment and strong partners.
The same elements that make for a winning racing team can also help make your portable sanitation business a success.
Racing strategy is “part science” and “part magic.” The science part is everything that is done before the rubber meets the road.
Racing teams employ engine researchers, aerodynamics specialists, material engineers, fuel and lubrication chemists, and even performance coaches for the pit crew and the drivers—anything to get an edge over their competition!
Strategy is also essential to winning in business, and your strategy should be written down in your business plan. A strong, well thought out business plan is one of the most important things that you can do to help make your future direction clear, your marketing effective, your finances secure, and your customers loyal.
If you don’t have a business plan in writing, take some time to think through questions about where you are and where you would like your business to be in the future. A clearly written business plan can help you to stay focused and on the right track towards achieving your goals. It is truly amazing to watch Massa’s pit crew completely service his car in less than 60 seconds. His team can refuel and change tires in almost the blink of an eye. They are perfectly synchronized; everyone works as a whole to get the job done quickly and efficiently. The crew is a crucial component to winning races.
Make sure that your “crew” knows exactly what is expected of them and that they are well-trained for their jobs. Keep lines of communication open so that they don’t feel threatened if they need to come to you with any questions or concerns.
And, always remember to praise them for all the hard work they do every day. When employees like their jobs and feel appreciated, you’ll see a team that functions as a harmonious unit, synchronized just like a Formula One pit crew.
Experience and Leadership
When the drivers get behind their wheels and start their engines, everything that can be controlled by science and teamwork is finished. To win races, the car still needs a daring individual driving by the seat of his pants to speed past the competition.
Felipe Massa began racing — and winning — at the age of eight. He began kart racing as a child, eventually moving up to racing Formula Chevrolet. Later, he also spent time in the Italian Formula Renault series. His current “big time” contract with Scuderia Ferrari would not have been possible without all of the experience he gained while making some rookie mistakes in these other series.
In business you are bound to make some mistakes, but the lessons that you learn from them will be invaluable when your business hits the big time.
Massa has to make split-second decisions during a race that can mean the difference between winning and losing, and you’ll have to make important decisions everyday too. Learn from the mistakes you make. Listen to your employees. Clearly define your goals; write them down. Do these things and your people will have a leader that they can rely on to steer them in the right direction.
The Right Equipment and Partners
One of the most important elements for winning a Formula One race is, of course, the car and the team that sponsors it! A modern Formula One racecar has as much in common with a jet fighter as it does with an ordinary road car. And for the companies that develop these machines, winning is not only a matter of pride, it can mean millions in additional sales around the world. For companies like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche—winning is everything.
The products and services that you offer are the most important part of your business too! The Massa family is accustomed to winning and that’s why they chose PolyJohn as their partner for success in South America. PolyJohn’s restrooms, sinks, tanks, and other accessories are designed to give your business that winning edge.
It is our daily goal to provide you with the products and service that will help you succeed in your community. We know that the partners you choose can mean the difference between winning and losing.
